As you take a deep breath and your feet up, you feel the sunlight hit your neck and it prompts you to pay closer attention to the environment around you; the sounds, the smells, the warmth. These are important factors to comfortable indoor living spaces. Now imagine technology elegantly integrated into the space meant to support greater comfort, convenience, and overall quality of life. That's what we'll discuss today. Wellness technology is about making indoor environments mimic nature and improve quality of life. Humans spend more of their time indoors than outdoors, contrary to most of our history. Wellness technology encompasses principles of sustainability and applies the intelligence of automation systems so that designers can plan solutions that are the greatest fit for each client. They can then work with the client to implement simpler solutions or partner with a qualified home technology specialist for more intuitive solutions.

These applications tend to have greater complexity of design versus common residential, mostly due to the existence of both private and public spaces. We will examine the commercial aspects of multi-family applications to insure compliance of our design. We will investigate the newest trends that are impacting future design to include décor trends, disruptive technology, demand based on demographics, sustainability, and factors affecting health and wellbeing.

  • [HSW | IDCEC-approved] Alzheimer’s is a degenerative disease with no known cure. People are living with Alzheimer’s in various stages, and many are undiagnosed and uncared for. While there are many institutions, and residential living facilities available, they are costly and not an option for much of the Alzheimer community. This CEU is an instrument to help the design community to understand our role in providing design solutions for persons living with Alzheimer’s in their home. This CEU is not an exhaustive view, but a starting point to understanding Alzheimer’s and its various stages, some applicable design strategies and additional research and resources on the topic.

Organizations are onboarding, reskilling and upskilling people at a rapid pace while schools and universities are learning quickly how to adapt to serve both in-person and remote learners. Our research has uncovered three key principles for creating spaces that support better hybrid learning experiences. These principles centered around inclusivity, engagement and ease have led to new learning space applications that successfully integrate technology in physical space to fully support hybrid teaching and learning.

CEU 15 | DESIGNING ADAPTIVE KITCHENS FOR ACTIVE AGING CLIENTS

  • [HSW | IDCEC-approved] Aging is traditionally seen as a negative experience fraught with challenges and limitations. Baby Boomers are changing that narrative and reshaping what it means to age for themselves and future generations. With this shift comes a heightened sense of health, wellness, and desire to stay at home — to live in place. To accomplish that, architects and designers must approach adaptive kitchens to suit the changing needs of older adults as well as multigenerational users. This course will examine active aging; adaptive kitchen design; and connected, smart appliances that are as high-performance as they are functional. The CEU qualifies for continuing education credits that count toward the National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB’s) Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) credential.

The ASID Texas Chapter represents 1,700+ Practitioner, Educator, Student and Industry Representative members (almost 1,100 of which are Practitioners and/or Educators) throughout the state of Texas excluding the greater Houston area, which is covered by the ASID Texas Gulf Coast Chapter.
