> presented by: Ashlynn Bourque of Sherwin Williams
  • [HSW-SD | IDCEC-approved | AIA-approved | GBCI-approved] Home. The definition of what makes a house a home may not have changed, but the disruption caused by the global health crisis has upended how we live in, feel about and use our homes. As designers, you play a vital role in helping your clients transform underutilized spaces and incorporate colors and materials that help them ”live well” in their homes. This course will explore the dynamics impacting residential design in the COVID era, identify the role that paint technologies can play in helping promote indoor air quality, review how intrinsic color is in the well-being discussion, and identify design elements that harness the power of nature to promote physical and emotional well-being.

  • [HSW | IDCEC-approved] Current population trends reveal U.S. population will grow double digits in the coming decades. This growth also brings significant shifts within age groups, resulting in the number of aging adults increasing at a far higher pace than middle-age and young adults. It is important to consider how lighting design affects aging adults. This course investigates factors contributing to this need and investigates design options related to lighting and an aging population. Learning objectives: Review population statistics and insights driving current trend. Investigate human physiological factors as to the need for more light as we age. Define proper illuminance levels within residential spaces. Identify design issues important to all space types.

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

ATTENTION: The speaker for the original course "Decorative Lighting and the WELL Building Standard - Who Knew?" had to cancel late afternoon on Monday, August 8 due to a family emergency. Everyone registered for that course is now automatically registered for the following replacement course:
CEU 04 | HOW TO SPECIFY SEAMLESS ACOUSTICAL CEILINGS
> Location: 2nd Floor of the Trade Mart in space 2844 Hospitality Suite (next to 2800 Expo)
> presented by: Lee Baggett of Armstrong Ceilings
  • [HSW | IDCEC-approved | AIA-approved | GBCI-approved] Two major components of indoor environmental quality (IEQ) are aesthetics and acoustics. This course discusses ceiling systems that provide both qualities, leading to better health, safety, and well-being for occupants. It provides a historical exploration of ceiling systems that have evolved to meet occupant needs, incorporating materials that meet safety standards and exceed performance standards for sound absorption and speech intelligibility—all of which ultimately affect how people work, learn, heal, and play in ways that elevate the quality of their lives.
CEU 05 | BIOPHILIC LIGHTING DESIGN: A NATURAL CONNECTION | SOLD OUT
> Location: 3rd Floor of the Trade Mart in Progress Lighting's showroom [space 3840]
> presented by: Michelle Gross, LC, IES of Richard Alan & Associates
> NOTE: This course is being repeated on Friday @ 10:30 AM.
  • [HSW | IDCEC-approved] In today's world, people spend more time inside, and our connections to nature, natural light and green spaces have declined. Biophilic design brings elements of the outdoors into the built environment, fulfilling people's biological, inherent need to connect with nature. By emulating the qualities of natural light, echoing natural forms and shapes, and utilizing organic materials, new lighting designs can satisfy biophilic needs, resulting in improved health, well-being and productivity. This presentation explores ways that advances in lighting technology and a sustainable, creative approach to lighting fixture design provide solutions to achieving biophilic design goals in residential and hospitality spaces.

3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

CEU 06 | DESIGNING FOR SENSORY EXPERIENCE: AN APPROACH FOR INCLUSIVE DESIGN
> Location: 2nd Floor of the Trade Mart in space 2844 Hospitality Suite (next to 2800 Expo)
> presented by: David Euscher, ASID, IIDA, LEED AP, WELL AP of Corgan
  • [HSW-BF | IDCEC-approved] The course will address concepts of Universal Design through the lens of the emerging practice of experiential design. Many times, the design of the built environment provides solutions for primarily mobility or vision impaired persons, and when it is not integral to the design, it may be seen as an “accommodation” rather than a solution that is a seamless part of the experience of the space. Experiential design is an emerging field that includes people without Interior Design or Architecture education, yet they engage deeply with the built environment. Experiential design strives to engage all of the senses to shape or enhance the experience of a place. How might Interior Designers incorporate the 5 senses to address differences in hearing ability, or neuro diversity? How might we make built environments more engaging and inclusive for people across a broader spectrum of abilities and special needs? The content will include built projects and conceptual projects as case studies, as well as examples of research projects and an overview of Universal Design principles and Experiential Design principles.
CEU 07 | COLOR METRICS - TUNING WHITE LIGHT | SOLD OUT
> Location: 3rd Floor of the Trade Mart in Progress Lighting's showroom [space 3840]
> presented by: Linkoln Dixon, LC, IES of Progress Lighting
> IMPORTANT: THIS COURSE WAS OFFERED AT CDT LAST YEAR. IF YOU TOOK THIS CLASS IN 2021, DO NOT SIGN UP FOR IT AGAIN.
  • [HSW | IDCEC-approved] This course will take an in-depth approach to explain and demonstrate the various means of tuning white light. Discussion includes key lighting terminology, such as corelated color temperature (CCT), color rendering index (CRI), spectral power distribution, and tunable white. Course will provide specific examples of the various ways white light can be controlled, while providing a hands-on approach to understanding the affect as it relates to lighting in today’s ever-changing world.

CEU 11 | CENTERING WELLBEING THROUGH LEARNING SPACES
> Location: 2nd Floor of the Trade Mart in space 2844 Hospitality Suite (next to 2800 Expo)
> presented by: Darrell Stanley of Steelcase
  • [HSW | IDCEC-approved | AIA-approved] There is growing concern for student and educator wellbeing and the challenges each are facing, making it difficult for each group to do their best learning and teaching. New research helps you better understand and identify ways to center wellbeing in learning spaces. Our research suggests that a person’s wellbeing is better understood as a confluence of physical, cognitive and emotional factors. The research identifies six pillars of human wellbeing that are universally true: meaning, belonging, authenticity, mindfulness, optimism and vitality. Additionally, the dimensions of what impacts our wellbeing are intrinsically connected to our personal relationships and the people/environments around us.

CEU 13 | HEALTHY DESIGN IN A POST-COVID WORLD: CLEAN AIR AND WELLNESS FROM THE TOP DOWN
> Location: 2nd Floor of the Trade Mart in space 2844 Hospitality Suite (next to 2800 Expo)
> presented by: Grace Jacob of Armstrong Ceilings
  • [HSW |  IDCEC-approved | AIA-approved | GBCI-approved] The COVID-19 pandemic is redefining standards for health and safety protocols in all aspects of life, including indoor spaces. As employers, educators and building owners seek to reopen their facilities, they are looking for ways to meet heightened expectations of workers and occupants. Guiding these decisions are recommendations from industry organizations such as the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), which offers guidance on how changes to building operations, particularly HVAC systems, can reduce airborne exposures. Recent innovations in ceiling systems can contribute to these efforts. For example, one new option on the market reduces air leakage through the ceiling plane by up to four times. Reducing air leaks can significantly increase the effectiveness of air ventilation and filtration systems, particularly where ventilation systems may have limited capacity to increase airflow or add fresh air.

CEU 14 | ELEVATING THE AIRPORT ENVIRONMENT EXPERIENCE
> Location: 2nd Floor of the Trade Mart in space 2844 Hospitality Suite (next to 2800 Expo)
> presented by: Tonya Wood, ASID, RID of Mead & Hunt
  • [HSW | IDCEC-approved] Creating harmonious interiors within a large, public airport space is challenging. We must account for persons from different cultures, ethnicities, and economic backgrounds, with varied health-related requirements. The FAA reports that an estimated 2,900,000 passengers fly every day in and out of US airports. In addition to navigating post 9-11 increased safety regulations, passengers must also deal with pandemic stressors such as feeling an increased loss of control, grief, and fear of the unknown. Respect for our customers’ individual safety and welfare needs must be treated as a priority. During the presentation, solutions on how to meet these needs will be shared that address life safety wayfinding requirements, the use of healthy materials, how to address mental health issues in the public spaces and providing enjoyable experiences for all, regardless of physical constraints, creating healthy, beautiful, sustainable, and fun airport experiences.
